Dead Man's Penny

This is known as a dead man's penny. I discovered it on a monument at the City of London cemetery.

  1. A memorial plaque as issued to the next of kin of those who died in the First World War. Fascinating. It is sometimes said that they could affix to a headstone if they could not afford an inscription. It is rarely seen being used in this way.

By the way, the qualifying period for a Commonwealth War Graves Commission Headstone - as used in war cemeteries around the world - was 1914-1921 for WW1 and 1939-1947 for WW2.

I never fail to be impressed at the 'treasures' you uncover. Thank you!
